पृथ्वी की सतह टेक्टोनिक प्लेट्स से बनी है जो लगातार हिलती रहती हैं, जिससे भूकंप और ज्वालामुखी जैसी घटनाएं होती हैं। पृथ्वी पर सात प्रमुख टेक्टोनिक प्लेटें हैं: अफ्रीकी, अंटार्कटिक, यूरेशियन, इंडो-ऑस्ट्रेलियाई, उत्तरी अमेरिकी, प्रशांत और दक्षिण अमेरिकी। भारत इंडो-ऑस्ट्रेलियाई प्लेट पर स्थित है।

टैकटोनिक प्लेट्स को बड़े बांधों से खतरा है क्योंकि वह प्लेट्स के ऊपर असंतुलन पैदा करते हैं। सोने की बात है की ठोस जमीन को काटकर वहां पानी भर दिया जाए तो पानी में उठने वाली जल तरंगे भी प्लेट्स को डिस्टर्ब कर सकती हैं। उत्तराखंड में होने वाले हादसे इसके प्रत्यक्ष उदाहरण हैं।

The surface of the Earth is made up of tectonic plates that keep moving continuously, causing incidents like earthquakes and volcanoes. There are seven major tectonic plates on Earth: African, Antarctic, Eurasian, Indo-Australian, North American, Pacific and South American. India is located on the Indo-Australian plate.

Tectonic plates are threatened by big dams because they create imbalances on the plates. It is a matter of fact that if solid land is cut and filled with water, then the waves rising in the water can also disturb the plates. The accidents happening in Uttarakhand are a direct example of this.
